Green Software Maturity Matrix: A First Look for Swiss Companies

GSMM Levels

Sustainability is no longer a “nice-to-have” but a business necessity — including in IT. But where does your organisation stand on Green Software? The Green Software Maturity Matrix (GSMM) provides a practical framework for self-assessment. It shows how far sustainable principles, patterns and processes are already embedded in the development and operation of your IT — and how much room for improvement remains.

What is the GSMM?

The GSMM is a maturity model that, similar to project management or cybersecurity frameworks, helps identify an organisation’s status quo and plan targeted next steps. The goal is both to improve the foundations and to promote excellence — in other words, to motivate laggards and continue to inspire frontrunners.

Why is Green Software more than just “nice”?

Implementing green software is not a PR tool but a strategic risk management measure. Progress along the GSMM levels helps organisations respond resiliently to the following challenges:

  • Stricter ESG and EU regulations in sustainable IT.
  • Climate-related disruptions to physical IT infrastructure.
  • Cost risks from dynamic electricity tariffs and EU requirements for reuse, repair and recycling.
  • Employee retention: young talent in particular wants to be part of the solution to the climate crisis — not part of the problem.

The five levels of the Green Software Maturity Matrix

  1. Level 1 – Reactive and unplanned: No strategy at the organisational level. Individual committed people try to set impulses. High dependence on individual initiatives.
  2. Level 2 – First steps, but inconsistent: Initial approaches exist, but without an overarching framework. Sustainability is implemented differently depending on the project or team.
  3. Level 3 – Structured and well-founded: Sustainable principles are embedded in processes and applied organisation-wide. First meaningful data is available.
  4. Level 4 – Real-time capable and data-driven: Dynamic data collection allows continuous measurement of progress. Decisions are based on real-time information.
  5. Level 5 – Inspiring and leading: Your organisation lives sustainability consistently. It continuously improves its processes based on live data and is regarded as a role model at conferences and in professional circles — the “Yoda with keyboard” of Green Software.

Conclusion: Getting started is worthwhile — regardless of current maturity level

The GSMM does not provide a one-size-fits-all solution, but a clear, practical orientation framework. For Swiss companies, it offers an opportunity to position themselves for the future — not only from a regulatory standpoint, but also strategically and in terms of talent.

Important to note: the Green Software Maturity Matrix is still a young tool — many organisations, whether in Switzerland or worldwide, are currently only at Level 1. Strategic engagement with Green Software is still in its early stages in many companies. To my knowledge, no one in the world seriously claims to have reached Level 5. This makes getting started all the more valuable: those who begin now can position themselves early as pioneers.
